A new major entrance was important to the parish because it would house a 3-stop elevator connecting the Parish Hall (basement), Grade level and the Nave (first floor). It could be built without disturbing the existing church structure. The large gothic arch exaggerates the church window arches. The limestone arch is similar to the front doors, and the field cut limestone and water table match and blend with the existing building. Visually, the new stonework is separated from the existing by an exterior finish insulation system. This was done to offset differences in the stone and to reduce the budget. Inside the addition, two large columns and two wall brackets relate to the columns at the transept. In addition to providing a focal point, they conceal indirect lighting fixtures. This addition included a new formal entrance and elevator for handicap accessibility, new parking lot and handicap accessible unisex restroom. |
